Description:About us: Abilities United, a Palo Alto nonprofit championing people of all abilities, offers Aquatic Services in the fully accessible, indoor, warm-water therapeutic pool of the Betty Wright Swim Center. We deliver quality aquatic rehabilitation, fitness and recreation services to individuals of all ages and physical and developmental abilities. People in wheelchairs can easily enter the pool using water-accessible wheelchairs and the zero-depth wheelchair ramp. The recently installed state-of-the-art solar-heating and saline water systems make the water and air environments comfortable for all individuals and ideal for adults and children suffering from a physical disability or a chronic condition such as arthritis or fibromyalgia.

Staff members benefit from monthly, quarterly and annual trainings to stay current on the latest techniques and methods in aquatic fitness, recreation, and rehabilitation. As a leader in aquatic services, we offer multiple opportunities for career development to meet new and current aquatic professionals’ needs. A recognized local therapy center today, we operate under a strategic plan to become a national aquatic therapy leader by 2014.

Founded In 1963, Abilities United celebrates 50 years of service to the Bay Area community members and continues to be a model of how society can be barrier-free to enable the full participation of people with disabilities and their families.

Abilities United is a United Way Affiliated Agency and a not-for-profit 501 (c)(3) organization, which delivers social services to residents of San Mateo and Santa Clara County across all age groups and abilities. Each year, more than 2,000 people and their families use our training, education and support services. Abilities United is conveniently located in south Palo Alto near the Mitchell Park Public Library, shopping, and public transportation routes.
Duties:In addition to teaching Swim Lessons, Swim Instructor Responsibilities include:
• Maintaining a healthy and safe pool atmosphere at all times
• Ensuring a fun and sanitary environment
• Professional, ethical, punctual, follows business practices
• Educating patrons on Pool Rules, Policies and Procedures, and water safety
• Meeting and greeting our patrons in a warm and welcoming setting
• Following through with the completion of Progress Reports

Swim Instructors also assist as lifeguards to maintain pool rules and enforce policies and procedures.

Essential Requirements:
•Teach aquatic recreational swim curriculum in water as detailed in Job Duties.
• Plan and track all aspects of services provided as detailed in Job Duties.
• Communicate clearly and effectively as detailed in Job Duties.
• Provide on-deck support as detailed in Job Duties.
- OR provide chin or command response as needed

Detailed Job Duties:
Teaching swim lessons
In-water awaiting student/s five minutes before lesson begins
Greet students and introduce all students to each other
Explain three tasks and one goal of each lesson
Teach each lesson according to lesson plan
Adjust each lesson plan according to needs
Utilize positive reinforcement techniques and encouragement every lesson
Complete each lesson by reviewing tasks

Planning and tracking
Develop and review session plans to fit each level, station and one on one classes prior to second week of session
Utilize assessments, parent interviews and observation to determine individual goals and objectives
Take daily notes of student progress
Complete diplomas and turn in for review per schedule
Complete progress reports and final reports per schedule
Complete tracking sheets per schedule

Communicate proactively with students
Communicate professionally and succinctly with parents within five-minutes between lessons
Assure each parent receiving equal attention and communication time within each session
Address concerns needing follow-up action with program manager
Address issues needing immediate attention to manager on duty
Communicate with other in-water instructors to assure a safe, supportive work place
Call all families who no-show for class within 15 minutes of class start (if one on one) or at end of shift (if group class)
Assist with calling all frequent students if unforeseen pool closure occurs at least 60 minutes prior to class start

On-deck support Assist with the set-up and takedown of classes (lane-lines, equipment, A frames)
Enforcing shower rule among class and therapy students
Assist students needing wheelchair transport up and down wheelchair ramp
Complete additional duties as assigned by manager on duty

Qualifications:Must be minimum of 18 years old

Education & Experience:
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Prior Swim Instructor Experience
• Ability to demonstrate leadership/teaching abilities
• Knowledgeable of swimming stokes
• Experience working with different able individuals

Other Requirements:
• Current / recent certification: Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR, AED, Oxygen Administration
• Current / recent certification: Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR, AED, Oxygen Administration

• Ability to push individuals who weigh 350+ lbs in a wheelchair up and down ramps
• Ability to perform American Red Cross lifesaving techniques to maintain client safety in the event of a pool emergency
• Ability to scrub floors, vacuum pool bottom, & clean.
